Stevens inherits GAS win at Peach State Speedway

by: Allen Hastings

Jefferson, GA  - Racing was very intense in the 31 car field during the 100 lap Toyota Tundra presented by Jones Recycling Georgia Asphalt Series feature at Peach State Speedway Saturday night. There were great battles throughout the 31 car field but especially in the top 5 positions.

In the last 20 laps Doug Stevens of Lovejoy, GA and Roger Delp of Newnan, GA battled bumper to bumper and side by side. Coming out of turn four on the final lap, Delp passed Stevens.  After Delp's car failed the post race inspection, Doug Stevens was declared the winner.

This was Stevens first Georgia Asphalt Series victory.

ICEMAN (25 laps) Phil Peppers of Jefferson, passed Otis Brooks also of Jefferson, on lap 3 on his way to win the Iceman division feature event.  Rounding out the top 5 were Brian Hardman, Richard Herrin, Brooks and Brandon Woods.

SPORTSMAN (20 laps) The Sportsman feature was a hard hitting (literally) and thrilling event. At the start of the event, Travis Hearn and Kieth Barrett got together going into turn one, spinning up the track toward the outside retaining wall. Chris McKeehen, trying to avoid the spinning cars, went high to avoid the other two cars, never the less, he got caught up in the spin, sending him hard into the outside retaining wall. His car crawled up the wall, coming down on all four wheels, Meanwhile, Hearn's car rolled onto it's roof and then back over on all four wheels. The event was red flagged. All drivers were OK.

After the restart, racing went without incident until the leaders came to the checkered flag. That's when Greg Ausburn and Randy Haney, running side by side, got together sending eventual winner Ausburn hard into the inside retaining wall. Ausburn was uninjured, but his racer was completely distroyed. Little consolation for winning the race. Rounding out the top five were Haney, Russell Shore, Matt Rouse and Chuck Cooper.

MINI-STOCK (15 laps) Anderson, South Carolina's Brad Burdette took his second win in as many weeks winning the Mini-Stock feature. Rounding out the top 5 were Gerald Jones, Jimmy Bales, Tad Gaines and Spanky Hicks.

The next event at Peach State Speedway will be Saturday, July 9th with Double Late Model Features.
