Jefferson,
Georgia (June 24, 2006) - It was a rare night for the Georgia
Asphalt Series. The GAS Series ran a 150 lapper on North Georgia's
fast half mile oval. This is a change from its normal 100 lap
format. Thirty-eight GAS Series competitors were on hand to take on
the very fast track and the brutal heat.
When all was said and done, Matt Hawkins of Canton, Georgia took his first Georgia Asphalt Series win Saturday night at Peach State Speedway in the Atlanta Freightliner 150 presented by CAT Power Systems. The 2005 Southern All Stars Champion has had some bad luck earlier in the year but has seemed to turn the MHR Race Teams luck around for the 18 year old's driver. Short track veteran Mike Garvey has been guiding the team back to the front. "I gave it all I had tonight," said Hawkins, "once I got out front, the car seemed to drive really well."
Two
other drivers who led during the race were 2004 GAS Series Champion
and current points leader Fredrick Moore and Doug Stevens.
Stevens returned to the series after having to sit out a couple of
races due to an injury during a Legends race at Lanier National
Raceway. Moore had engine problems earlier in the week but recovered
to have a runner up finish.
Rounding out the top five were Ronnie Sanders of Fayetteville, Georgia and Russell Fleeman of Dacula, Georgia
NOTES:
-
Bill Plemons, Jr. of Greensboro, Georgia, Pat Brewer of Seymour, Tennessee and Wes Burton of Kannapolis, North Carolina made their first GAS Series starts. Plemons finished 12th, Brewer finished 19th and Burton finished 24th.
-
Another great finish for veteran Ronnie Sanders. Sanders has had consistent top 5 finishes during the 2006 season and seems to be right on the edge of getting his first win of the season.
