World Crown Weekend - Day #2
Those of you that stayed home last night missed some good racing action. The late model qualifying was exciting as 43 cars took tome for the 38 starting spots for today's World Crown 250 lap race sponsored by Zaxbys. We locked in the top 24 on time and the rest had to race their way into the field, Scheduled was two 25 lap heat races, and a 25 lap last chance race.
When it was all said and done four of the late model competitors for some unknown reason chose NOT to compete in the heat races, thereby eliminating them from being able to compete in the last chance race also. We had a crash in the second heat race that involved three cars, and the one car was damaged so badly he couldn't continue, so that eliminated our five cars that was needed to set the field.
38 cars are all now set and raring to go today at the drop of the green flag at 2 pm for the start of the Zaxbys World Crown 250. The weather will be warn, and racing should be great. Don't miss this big event. All the race teams hauler will be moved out of the infield so every will be able to see the entire track. We are hoping for a big turnout.
In late model qualifying Matt Hawkins won the Atlanta Freightliner Pole Award. His lap of 17.609 bested all the other drivers, and was a very fast time. Paul Kelley qualified second, followed by Wes Burton, Wayne Willard, and Ryan Crane
The lock in speed of 24th (to avoid the heat races was a blazing fast 180361 posted by John Was Townley in the Zaxby's #09 car. SO anyone other than that would have to race in the heat race to earn a spot into the World Crown 250.
In local racing last night. The Mini Stocks had 30 entries, and it was quite a show. Troy French won the Pole Friday night and an additional $100 sponsored by Bobby's Signs for fast time. He drew a 6 on the inversion and had to fight through some tough drivers in front of him to get to the front. It tok him a few laps by he made it there, and then there was a spirited battle between he and Steve Hill for the top spot the remainder of the race. With so much traffic Hill had to try and pick his spots to get around, and Frenchs car was so fast too. French would pull out to a lead, and then Hill would run him down again. AT the end French won by less than 1/2 second over Hill. Wayne Smith was third, followed by Brad Burdette and William Earnest
Congrats to Steve Hill for being this season 2007 points Champion
In the Pro Trucks we also had a very nice field of entries. 22 were on had, and 21 took the green flag. Kevin Barrett won the pole and with the inversion he started third. Brian Huff took the green flag first and lead into the first turn. As the completed lap number one, two trucks running mid-pack tangled on the front straight, and it eliminated four trucks before it was over. Scott Davis, Scooter Delaune, Russell Shore, and Larrry Jordan
When the racing got going again, Huff was back again leading, but Barrett working his way up to him, and when Barrett passed for the lead, he was able to root under Huff and get under him. When that happened he got freight trained by several trucks and fell back to about sixth, where he finished.
When the checkers fell it was Barrett winning, followed by Roger Adkins, Mike Davidson, Paul Antley, and Wes Whitfield
Congrats to Roger Adkins your 2007 Peach State Speedway Pro Truck Champ
In the Ice Man race, we had about 15 cars show up. It was a good race with very competitive cars. I didn't get a competitive run down on the finish, so with the points being so close, I can't pass along who the champion is at this time. Hardman had problems in practice yesterday, and did race but wasn't as fats as usual. He was 50 50 points ahead of Terry Martin going into the last race. Russell Shore was third and he won the race. SO check back here for addition info.
I do know we saw a great race among the top three or four cars. and Russell shore was able to hang on for the win Phil Peppers finished second.
The complete run down for all divisions and updated points will be posted next week.
AND
Barrett Disqualified
Kevin Barrett, winner of the Pro Truck race was disqualified in post race tech. When ask to tear down the items requested for the evening he refused, and that is an automatic disqualification. Roger Adkins was moved up to the winners position and will receive the first place check. Barrett will be placed in last position.
